Since the science has proven that a woman’s brain is more complex than man’s brain, a study shows that women deserve more sleep then man because their brain is not only more complex but also works harder.

Jim Horne, a professor, and director of the Sleep Research Center at Loughborough University has a detailed explanation regarding this study. According to the professor’s study, women who face poor sleep are prone to psychological distress, depression, hostility or even anger. Anyway, these consequences are not associated with the same degree of sleep disorder in men.

Aside from his specific explanation related to this subject, Professor Horne has also written a book known as “Sleepfaring: A Journey Through The Science Of Sleep”. In his words, one of the major functions of sleep is to let our brain recover and repair itself after a long busy day.

While we sleep, the cortex of our brain – the part that’s responsible for thought memory, language, and other complex processes  – disengages from the senses and starts recovering. The more we use our brain during the day, the more it needs to recover during the night, and consequently, the more sleep we need – especially women because of their flexibility and ability to do more complex things that require mental strength, unlike men. This explains why women are in need of greater and more quality sleep.

Although there are men who’re profession requires a lot of thinking and decision-making and following this – they also require greater and more quality sleep than the average male – they certainly don’t use their brain as much a women, according to Professor Horne and his study.

Apparently, women’s brains are wired differently and build more complex than men’s and because of that, they need more time to recover and their sleep need is slightly greater. Some women sleep 20 minutes more than the average men, however, some females need slightly more or less sleeping than this.

As we all have heard, sleeping for 8 hours is ideal for the proper and effective function of the body and mind, however, women need more than 8 hours of sleep due to their brains which are differently wired and are more complex than men’s. What actually makes a brain more complex is the habit of multi-tasking that women are used to, which undoubtedly exposes their brains to more strenuous activities.

According to this, women’s brain needs more time to repair completely, and there isn’t a better way to do that than with sleeping. As we mentioned, a tired man who’s working a job that includes a decision-making can also require more sleep than the average man, however, still less than the average woman.

Professor Horne also has some advice when it comes to improving sleep quality:

  • Setting up a sleep routine – the brain will start recognizing when to slow down and relax.
  • Avoiding stimulative foods and drinks before going to bed – some foods and drinks are stimulants to the brain and can cause insomnia (coffee, coke, energy drink, chocolate, sugar). Avoid these stimulants before going to bed and you will certainly increase our sleep quality.
  • Meditate – woman’s brain is working constantly which may cause difficulties with sleeping. Meditation can help a woman’s brain to relax and get in a state of deep relaxation.
  • Practice yoga – yoga postures will prepare your body for a good sleep, which is why practicing yoga is recommended to insomniacs.
  • Try Melatonin – 1-3 mg of melatonin can help you sleep better, according to Professor
