First off, let me just say that I love my job. I do. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Sure, the days are long and sometimes the nights are too; but I absolutely love what I do. What is my job title exactly, you ask? I am a stay at home mom.

I know, I know. A lot of you still believe that a SAHM does absolutely nothing all day. Our jobs aren’t hard. There’s nothing to it. I am here to tell you that there is a misconception in your ideas. You think that all we do is eat snacks and color and take naps after lunch. None of that is true.

Okay, well maybe some days it’s a little true. We have our play days just like any other person who takes a free day from their job. But we still have to do our daily duties in order to keep a sane household.

This is what the day is like for the SAHM

Every day you wake up before everyone else to start the day. You make the coffee and pack the lunches while making breakfast and making sure everybody is up and getting ready. If one person is late, you’re all late. After getting the husband and kid(s) out the door, now it’s time to get ready and do all the grocery shopping and bill paying and every other errand. Someone else has asked you to do these things because they don’t have the time in their schedule. So, they throw it into yours.

By the time all the running is done, you get to come home put everything away, feed the baby, and put her down for a nap. And even though the greatest thing right now would be to sit down for five minutes, you can’t. You have an entire house to clean and laundry to do. Then on to put supper in the crockpot because there’s no way you’ll have time to do it in the evening.

And there’s more!

The kids have ball games. After two hours on the ball field, you get to go home and make plates and make sure everyone eats. Finally, it’s bath time and bedtime, for them at least. You on the other hand, still have a kitchen to clean up. And at last, get everything ready for the next morning.

When you finally do get to go to bed, your husband’s already in bed and your minds racing trying to figure out if you have forgotten to do anything. You make the mental checklist; lights off, doors are locked, and the kids are still in bed.

If you’re lucky, you might get “lucky”; if the both of you aren’t completely worn out from your day, or one of the little ones decided they needed a drink of water or thought you needed a sleeping buddy. Then you get to sleep for a few short hours only to be awoken and start it all over again.

It’s never as easy as it looks

As a stay at home mom, I sometimes find myself feeling jealous of my husband and others for being able to “clock out” and go home. I don’t have that. I once did and I don’t regret for a second leaving it. Sure, some days I’m too exhausted to function but with the love I receive, it’s all worth it. I love my little family and the job I have.

Some aren’t built for this type of job. I’m pretty positive I’m not built to work in a factory or drive an 18-wheeler. I was made to mom. And I try my best every single day to do what I can for my children. And that is enough.
