Mental health affects the way people think, feel and act. Mental health also has helped you determine the effective ways of how to handle your stress, make choices and relate to other people. People who experience mental or emotional health problems, there is a great possibility that their behavior, mood and the way of thinking will be affected. People who are experiencing mental health problems are probably aware of the warning signs of having mental health issues. However, recovering completely is always possible. If you start doing the practices below, you may become emotionally and mentally better; but of course seeing a professional would be the most important step of all.

Use stairs instead of an elevator.

When you have to go up or down, use stairs. Pay attention to each of your steps and become aware of your body while doing this. This will help you to calm your mind from all the noisy and distractive thoughts.

Connect with people.

Go out with your friends, meet new people, share your experiences.  If you do not feel good, ask for an advice from a friend or from someone who will understand you. Talk about your problems, do not keep them by yourself. Try to find a solution to the problems rather than being stuck on them.

Slow down.

Slow down your way of walking, life conditions, behaviors, talking and eating. Instead of chasing the time, move slowly and enjoy the moment.

Dance.

Some therapists use ‘dance/movement therapy’ for the psychological well-being of the clients. They believe when we feel overwhelmed, it is because of the negative energy being stuck inside of our body that needs to get out; and that this negative energy can be thrown out by our feet. Thus, when we dance or jump, the negative energy tends to go outside of your body, consequently, you experience feelings of happiness, comfort etc.

Pray/Meditate.

Do not pray or meditate just because ‘you have to do it’; because by then you will not be motivated. However, when you pray put your full attention to the words, to your bodily movements. When you meditate, focus on your breathing, or the same as in praying, to your bodily sensations. Be aware of the present moment and appreciate it.

Regular sleep/diet.

Irregular sleep is one of the major causes of mental and physical problems. The secret of many psychologically well people is waking up early in the morning. There is a link between waking up early and the feeling of happiness. You also feel more energized and motivated. Pay attention to eating on a regular schedule, and be careful on what you eat. Drink more water instead of colas. Try to drink two liters of water per day. Water makes our mind feel good.

Appreciate yourself.

Take time for yourself. Have a lot of smiles, love yourself, be in touch with yourself, be aware of yourself. Sit in a quiet place and talk to yourself. Say ‘ you are beautiful’, ‘ you can do it ’ while looking into the mirror. Accept yourself as you are and remember you are more important than anything else in the world.

Be open to new experiences.

By being open to new experience always take into account that any new experience can bring up positive or negative outcomes. Be ready for such difficulties. Focus on how you coped with such difficulties before in your life. Remember anything is temporary.

Dream.

Do not be afraid of dreaming. If some of your dreams didn’t come true, still keep dreaming, broaden your imagination; but always be open to disappointment in case of your dreams might not come true.

Walk.

If you have to go to school or to work, try to go by walking if they are not too far away. Find time for long walks in nature, do this every day in routine if possible. This will help your psychological well-being as well as your physical health.
