” Pain is real, but so is Hope.”

Not every disability is visible. Perhaps the invisible problems are much more important in regard to our health. Experts define multiple associations between mental health and chronic physical conditions that significantly impact people’s quality of life and consequences to society. Our mental health is the key to our physical health as well. But the problem is to recognize, to be aware of our emotional and mental health problems and the moment we become aware of it, to take an action to solve the problem and to break the stigma that the society has built walls upon it. Here are few signs of having emotional or mental health problems:

Thoughts of harming other people and/or yourself

Violent or aggressive thoughts may include impulses to take an action or just imagining doing them. These can involve those in which people see themselves hitting, stabbing, or injuring their children, family members, stranger’s pets, or even themselves. These people may use mental images, such as imagining themselves using knives, or, throwing themselves or others into the paths of trains or cars, out of windows, or off balconies, or other high places.

Sleep problems

Sleep problems, especially insomnia can be a warning sign of having mental health problems. In general, we need 7-9 hours of sleep, if you have changes in your sleep patterns, if you sleep too much or too little and cannot get enough sleep, it can be a symptom of a mental illness. Sleep problems should be taken seriously since it can also cause physical diseases, bring several psychological problems with itself and affect our daily activities.

Inability to execute daily activities and tasks

This includes, for example, inability to getting to school or work, or, having a house full of half-completed projects can also be a sign of having an emotional or mental health problems.

Believing things or hearing voices that are not real

You might hear your name called when there is no one with you, or, hear a kind supportive voice or a voice that helps you. This may happen sometimes, but if these voices are being heard almost always it can be a sign of having a mental problem. The process of seeing things that are not real may start out from the childhood period, with children developing an imaginary friend, someone only they can see or hear. In childhood period this may not be serious but things get serious as soon as this process continues through adolescence/adulthood.

Mood changes

Everyone may experience different moods in certain periods, however,  sudden, rapid and dramatic shifts in mood occurring at any time, anywhere, such as extreme distress or anger, without having no particular reason, can be a sign of emotional and mental health problems.

Low Energy

If you lack energy during the day, and find it hard to even get the small things done such as showering, if you have a low energy to exercise, and feel constantly tired, it can also be a sign of having some emotional or mental health problem that needs to be taken into consideration.

Additional warning signs of having an emotional or mental health problem include:

  • Lack of concentration
  • Social isolation and withdrawal
  • Lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities
  • Chronic Anxiety/Stress
  • Panic attacks

Note: One or two of these symptoms alone can’t predict an emotional or mental health problem. But only if a person experiences several of them. If you are already experiencing several symptoms given above, you should your problems with your family members, or a close friend that will understand you and you have to see immediately a professional. People with suicidal thoughts or attempt, or thoughts of harming others, should have immediate attention.
